The Mohawk was reefed in July 2012 as a US Veteran’s Memorial Reef.  It sits perfectly upright in the Gulf of Mexico in 87 feet of water off Lee County Florida and had attracted Goliath Grouper and other large marine life within only 12 days of sinking.   The videos on the site show it all.

We were on the Ultimate Getaway to photograph the sinking of the USCG vessel USS Mohawk on July 2, 2012. Three hours after, we were able to get in the water to dive this fresh wreck. I made one 120 minute dive on my rebreather using two different video cameras. The above image is a frame grab from one of them. Was amazed me the most was finding that six large barracuda and a school of Sergeant Majors had already made a homestead on the wreck by the we got to dive it.
